Cross‑country skis, boots, and poles (For more information on equipment hire, see Equipment Hire.)
Equipment can be hired if you don’t have your own.
Approximate hire cost: $30–40 per day or $50 for a weekend.
For weekend trips, it’s recommended to hire close to the resort so equipment can be exchanged if needed.
If you’re bringing your own equipment, please inform the Trip Leader when booking, as this may affect transport arrangements (vehicle space).
Bring a few pairs of socks of different thicknesses, as boot fit can vary.
Proper layering is essential for warmth and comfort.
Thermal underwear
Synthetic thermal layers are ideal in cold conditions. ie. Polypropylene.
Woollen thermals are also suitable, but more expensive. Cotton thermals are not suitable.
Trousers
Synthetic ski pants or tights are most comfortable. See also waterproof layers below.
Jeans or cotton clothing are not recommended as they become very cold when wet.
Warm top
A warm jumper or fleece layer is essential. Polartec‑style garments work well.
Socks
Warm woollen socks are recommended. A thin synthetic liner sock underneath can add further warmth.
Avoid cotton or cotton‑blend socks.
Waterproof layers
A good waterproof jacket is essential on all trips.
Use a japara (not oiled) or Gore‑Tex jacket without an insulated lining, ie a 'shell' jacket.
Waterproof over‑pants are also essential.
Downhill ski clothing is not recommended as it restricts movement and can cause overheating.
Gloves
Bring at least one spare pair in case they get wet.
Lightweight thermal gloves are usually sufficient, with waterproof over‑mitts for snowy conditions.
Beanie
Skiing goggles
Optional - useful in high snowfall conditions.
Food & water
For day trips, bring lunch plus snacks (fruit, nuts, chocolate, etc.).
Bring 1–2 litres of water or juice, or a thermos.
You may need to eat and drink more than usual due to exertion in cold conditions.
Sun protection
Sunscreen, sunglasses, and lip balm are essential — snow reflects sunlight.
Pack
A light, comfortable day pack to carry your gear.
Spare clothes
A dry change of clothes left in the car makes the trip home much more comfortable.
